SUMMARY OF KEY POINTS
What personal information do we process? Tap to Learn is designed as a local-first application. We do not require user accounts or registration. The App processes text visible on your screen only when you actively trigger a word lookup. Word lookup history is stored locally on your device.
Do we process any sensitive personal information? We do not process sensitive personal information.
Do we collect any information from third parties? We do not collect any information from third parties.
How do we process your information? When you look up a word, the recognized text is sent to third-party dictionary and translation APIs (Google Translate, Free Dictionary API, Wiktionary API) to retrieve definitions and translations. These API calls are made directly from your device and we do not store or intercept this data on our servers.
Do we have servers that store your data? No. Tap to Learn does not have user accounts, cloud storage, or server-side databases. All app data (word history, settings, preferences) is stored locally on your device.

1. WHAT INFORMATION DO WE COLLECT?
In Short: Tap to Learn collects minimal information, all stored locally on your device.
Tap to Learn does not require user registration or accounts. The following information may be processed locally on your device:
- Word Lookup History: Words and phrases you look up are saved in a local database (Room/SQLite) on your device so you can review them later. This data never leaves your device unless you explicitly choose to share it.
- App Settings: Your preferences (translation language, overlay opacity, button size, theme, haptic feedback settings) are stored locally using Android DataStore.
- Screen Content: When you trigger a word lookup, Tap to Learn captures a screenshot of your current screen to perform OCR (optical character recognition). This screenshot is processed entirely in memory and is not saved to disk or transmitted to any server.
Information Sent to Third-Party APIs
When you look up a word, the following data is sent to external services:
- Google Translate API: The word or phrase you tapped is sent to Google's translation service to detect the source language and provide a translation. Google's privacy policy applies to this data.
- Free Dictionary API: For English words, the word is sent to the Free Dictionary API to retrieve definitions, phonetics, and example sentences.
- Wiktionary API: The word may be sent to the Wiktionary REST API to retrieve additional definitions and linguistic information.
We do not control how these third-party services handle the data sent to them. We encourage you to review their respective privacy policies.
Information We Do NOT Collect
- We do not collect your name, email address, phone number, or any personally identifiable information.
- We do not collect device identifiers, IP addresses, or location data.
- We do not use analytics SDKs, advertising SDKs, or tracking pixels.
- We do not collect or transmit your screen content to our servers.
2. HOW DO WE PROCESS YOUR INFORMATION?
In Short: We process your information locally on your device to provide word lookup functionality.
We process information for the following purposes:
- To provide the word lookup service. When you tap a word on screen, we capture a screenshot, run OCR locally, and query third-party APIs for definitions and translations.
- To maintain your word history. Looked-up words are stored in a local database so you can review and study them later.
- To remember your preferences. Your app settings are stored locally so the App works the way you configured it.
3. WHAT LEGAL BASES DO WE RELY ON?
In Short: We process your personal information only when necessary and with a valid legal reason.
If you are located in the EU or UK: We rely on the following legal bases:
- Consent: You consent to data processing when you accept these terms and actively trigger word lookups.
- Legitimate Interests: We process information to provide and improve the App's core functionality.
- Legal Obligations: We may process information where required by law.
If you are located in Canada: We may process your information with your express or implied consent, which you can withdraw at any time by discontinuing use of the App.
4. WHEN AND WITH WHOM DO WE SHARE YOUR INFORMATION?
In Short: We do not share your personal information with any parties, except as necessary for word lookups.
Tap to Learn sends word lookup queries directly from your device to third-party dictionary and translation APIs. We do not operate proxy servers or intermediary services for these requests. The third-party services that may receive your lookup queries are:
- Google Translate (translate.googleapis.com)
- Free Dictionary API (api.dictionaryapi.dev)
- Wiktionary REST API (en.wiktionary.org)
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to anyone.
5. DO WE USE COOKIES AND TRACKING TECHNOLOGIES?
In Short: No. Tap to Learn does not use cookies, web beacons, tracking pixels, or any tracking technologies.
Tap to Learn is a native Android application that does not use cookies or web-based tracking technologies. We do not use Google Analytics, Firebase Analytics, or any other analytics services.
6. HOW WE USE AI AND MACHINE LEARNING
In Short: We use on-device machine learning for text recognition only.
Tap to Learn uses Google ML Kit for on-device optical character recognition (OCR). This technology runs entirely on your device and does not send images or screen content to any server. The ML Kit models support recognition of Latin, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Devanagari scripts.
Translation services are provided by Google Translate's API, which processes the specific word or phrase you look up — not your entire screen content.
7. HOW LONG DO WE KEEP YOUR INFORMATION?
In Short: Your data is stored locally and persists until you clear it or uninstall the App.
All data is stored locally on your device. Word history and settings persist as long as the App is installed. You can clear your word history at any time from within the App. Uninstalling the App removes all locally stored data permanently.
8. HOW DO WE KEEP YOUR INFORMATION SAFE?
In Short: Your data stays on your device, protected by Android's built-in security.
Since all data is stored locally on your device, it is protected by your device's own security measures (screen lock, encryption, etc.). Tap to Learn does not transmit personal data to external servers. Screenshots taken for OCR are processed in memory and immediately discarded — they are never written to disk or shared.
9. DO WE COLLECT INFORMATION FROM MINORS?
In Short: We do not knowingly collect data from children under 18.
We do not knowingly collect, solicit data from, or market to children under 18 years of age. By using the Services, you represent that you are at least 18. If you become aware of any data we may have collected from children under age 18, please contact us at support@link-bag.com.
10. WHAT ARE YOUR PRIVACY RIGHTS?
In Short: You have full control over your locally stored data.
Since Tap to Learn stores all data locally on your device and does not maintain any server-side user accounts or databases, you have complete control over your data:
- Access: You can view your word history within the App at any time.
- Deletion: You can clear your word history from within the App, or uninstall the App to remove all data.
- Portability: Your data is stored in a standard SQLite database on your device.
- Withdrawal of Consent: You can stop using the Accessibility Service or uninstall the App at any time.
If you are a resident of the European Economic Area, you may have additional rights under GDPR. If you are a California resident, you may have rights under CCPA. Since we do not collect or store personal information on our servers, most data subject requests are fulfilled by your ability to manage data directly on your device.
11. ACCESSIBILITY SERVICE AND SCREEN CAPTURE
In Short: Tap to Learn uses the Accessibility Service solely for taking screenshots to enable word lookup.
Tap to Learn requests access to Android's Accessibility Service for the following purpose:
- Screenshot Capture: On Android 11 and above, the Accessibility Service API is used to capture a screenshot of your current screen when you tap the Tap to Learn floating button. This screenshot is used for OCR text recognition so you can tap on words to look them up.
What we DO with the Accessibility Service:
- Capture a screenshot when you explicitly tap the floating button
- Process the screenshot locally using ML Kit OCR
- Discard the screenshot immediately after OCR processing
What we do NOT do with the Accessibility Service:
- We do NOT continuously monitor your screen
- We do NOT record, save, or transmit screenshots
- We do NOT read or log your keystrokes
- We do NOT collect information from other apps
- We do NOT access your notifications, messages, or personal content beyond the momentary screenshot
You can disable the Accessibility Service at any time in your device's Settings → Accessibility → Tap to Learn.
12. DO WE MAKE UPDATES TO THIS NOTICE?
In Short: Yes, we will update this notice as necessary to stay compliant with relevant laws.
We may update this Privacy Notice from time to time. The updated version will be indicated by an updated "Last updated" date at the top of this Privacy Notice. We encourage you to review this Privacy Notice frequently to be informed of how we are protecting your information.
